The flamenco dress, also known as gypsy dress, has its origins in the livestock fairs that were held during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in Andalusia.
At these fairs, which usually coincided with Easter, farmers took advantage of the influx of tourists to the cities to do business, with the Seville market being the most important one.
most important.
Country women who accompanied their husbands to the fairs used to wear simple gowns that were cool and comfortable to work in. These dresses were especially worn by gypsy women. Most of these gowns were made with polka dot fabrics, which were actually “defective” fabrics due to printing errors, cheaper fabrics, acquired by women of humbler condition.
These gowns caused a furor, becoming popular among the wealthiest women who designed their own version, much more ornate and with ruffles, to which they added all kinds of accessories such as combs, flamenco earrings, shawls and fans.
They also imitated the characteristic chignon worn by ranchers’ wives, which they made so that their hair would not bother them while they worked.
